Project Overview

The undercroft project sought to create an outdoor learning environment targeted to improving educational outcomes. These were achieved by suggesting a methodology involving stakeholder workshopping for the students and teachers. For the Students’ workshop, they were simply invited to draw/paint or write their ideas and aspirations for the new playscape through expressions of ‘fun experiences. The students’ work was then brought to the teachers workshop for reference and consideration, to brain storm games and make-believe ‘props’ or setting into the four category of activities, namely: Kinaesthetic learning; Spatial learning; Nature learning; and lastly Abstract learning. The teacher workshop then ends off with a group exercise redefine and develop the concept design. From these workshops. the outline design of a learning-conducive play environment crystallised. . The design for the playscape-cum-learing environment addressed two main aspects:

(i) Modes of learning (Nature, Spatial-, Abstract, and Kinaesthetic-learning)

(ii) Other Functional requirements

These aspects manifest as lavers of superimposed systems. to express the design scheme.
